Gain a Superpower!
American Sign Language Lunch & Learn Program for Elementary Schools
Launching Fall 2019!

We know sign language has power in a very literal cognitive sense but what we also love about this amazing language is how children have fun learning it and often times they feel like they have a “Superpower”!
Lil Signing Hands is excited to partner with the non-profit organization CLASS (Children's Language Acquisition Support System) to bring this FREE new program to Elementary Schools in St. John's and surrounding areas! We will be rolling out this program Fall 2019 and plan for it to run once a week (same day/time each week) until early June.
School Requirements
1. Provide space within the school during the lunch hour to allow our volunteer an area to facilitate the class. (An area of the library or available classroom, etc. may be suitable space).
2. Designate a staff member who can act as a point of contact upon arrival on the first day and assist with a quick orientation to the school. This person would be asked to remain in contact with the volunteer(s) for exchanging important information such as notification if the program must be cancelled for the day or if the volunteer is ill, etc.
3. End of program Evaluation by an administrator of the school.
Feedback
This is a new initiative so we encourage feedback throughout the program and aim to make this a positive experience that is both fun and educational. Specifics of the delivery of the program will be discussed with individual schools upon selection. Eg. The number of students who would participate as well as how long each weekly session will last will be decided with school consultation.
Restrictions
There are no restrictions for which schools can apply although schools that currently have a child who is Deaf, Hard of Hearing or non-speaking may be given preference.
Volunteer Process
We enforce a strict volunteer screening process which includes; application, interview, reference checks and certificate of conduct. In addition, each volunteer will be expected to attend monthly training seminars on tips and techniques of teaching American Sign Language to elementary aged students. Please ask us any questions about our process as we are happy to share that information. (Interested in volunteering? Click here and apply to become a Volunteer Signing Super Hero!)
If you have any questions please let us know. If you are interested in submitting a formal request for consideration please fill out the application below. Schools will receive official notification in September.
Thank you so much for showing interest in learning American Sign Language!
